Go Watch 'On My Block' on Netflix

I'm always on the hunt to find quality television shows that feature Black and Brown people as authentic and whole characters. Over the years, I've watched Netflix with a critical eye to see if and when they would use their successful distribution platform to uplift original content by a diverse array of creators and stories. Lately, they have been doing a good job with the influx of great diverse content to binge-watch on the streaming platform. On My Block is one of those series to binge-watch, preferably multiple times.

On My Block is still a fairly new show, which premiered a little over a week ago on March 16th. If you're reading this and did not watch the show, I will not include any spoilers because I want you to fully enjoy the teenage adventure as much as I did. The show is a coming of age story that follows four friends at the brink of their high school days in Los Angeles. It is a joy to watch a predominantly Latinx and Black cast, especially in a story of awkward teens trying to figure out who they want to be.

This show is so fun to watch. It's powerful to watch Black and Brown kids being portrayed as kids doing kid things. Yes, there is drama, heartbreak, and pain as they navigate through rough life transitions. But there is also laughter, silly adventures, young love, and friendship. What I enjoy most about On My Block is the characters' commitment to friendship and to each other.

In Squad We Trust. This is the creed that Monse, Ruby, Jamal, and Cesar live by. And they are working hard to not let anyone or any circumstance disrupt their tight circle. I hope Netflix will pick up On My Block for a second season. Until then, go ahead and watch season one.
